By: Sheila McDonald Hancock, Assistant Music Director
We are deep in preparations for our third Christ Our Life Catholic Regional Conference to be held September 20 and 21, 2014. Many of you attended all or some of this conference when it was presented in 2010 and 2012 and can attest to the profound experience gathering and worshiping with thousands of Catholics can be. I am humbled to be serving as Assistant Music Director for this year’s event.
I invite each of you to participate in some way in this event. If you can lend your voice to our choir or your instrument to our orchestra, that would be great! If you attend all or part of the conference as a spectator, that would also be great! Whatever you can give—time, talent and/or attendance—I promise it will enrich your life in ways you cannot begin to imagine.
We are so fortunate that Timothy Cardinal Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York has agreed to be our keynote speaker and also to celebrate Saturday’s Mass. You can learn about all of the world-renowned speakers at http://www.christourlifeiowa.com/speakers/. I have attended both previous conferences and highly recommend you consider doing so yourself.
The Christ Our Life Choir is open to anyone who cares to participate. In my own parish, I am going to structure the musician schedules so that we do not have choirs singing that weekend, to make it easier for you to participate if you choose to do so.
The Christ Our Life choir will rehearse at St. Pius X in Urbandale on the five Sundays prior to the conference weekend. If you cannot make all five rehearsals, don’t let this prohibit your participation. There will be online tools available to you to hear the music and rehearse at home. This music is recorded in “part specific” format, so you will hear the accompaniment, and all four voices, but your voice part (which you choose when you log onto the website) will be dominant and you can sing along in the privacy of your own home. I was privileged to provide the soprano part for this recording several years ago and was told it was very helpful, for those who rehearsed in this manner. We are singing music that will be familiar to many of you.
Some of the music we have begun to sing at Sacred Heart was chosen because of my participation in Christ Our Life (O God beyond All Praising, and Song of Mary, to name just two). The music is fun to learn and incredibly fun to sing.
You will meet musicians from the other area parishes and surrounding communities and make new friends throughout this process. It has deepened my appreciation for our Catholic liturgies and enriched my life by the presence of these other people, all lifting our voices in praise to God. I am so thrilled to be preparing for something this exciting! Along with our Music Director Scott Rieker, we look forward to joining with the talents of people from around the country to move into a deeper relationship with God. Please consider adding your talents in this “triumphant hymn of praise.”
